HISTORY
This county is one of the birthplaces of the Romanian literary language. It is very important from the educational point of view, because the educational establishments in Targoviste and Dambovita county have an old tradition and indisputable standard.
TOURIST ATTRACTIONS
- Viforata Monastery was built following the orders of ruler Vladislav Basarab (1447-1456) and it is located in Viforata village, 7 km away from Targoviste.
It was first documentary attested in 1557.
The monastery was restored in 1530 by ruler Vlad Inecatul, in 1635 by ruler Matei Basarab and in 1713 by Maria Brancoveanu, wife of ruler Constantin Brancoveanu, and after an earthquake in 1802.
The iconostasis of the monastery is carved by Karl Stork ,in baroque style. The most important objects that lie in the monastery are: crosses from 1704 and 1717, a collection of medieval art, a silvery icon of the great martyr saint George, dating back to 1631, which was donated by ruler Leon Tomsa and his wife, and a silver chalice dating back to 1775.
- The monastic complex at Dealu, near Targoviste, was one of the greatest cultural centers of the Middle Ages. From the original Greek monastic complex there stands only one church, founded by Radu the Great (1499-1501).
Inside, a crypt contains the head of Prince Michael the Brave, executed in 1601. Under the command of this famous Romanian prince, the monastery secured the defense of Targoviste in 1595 in front of Sinan Pasha’s troops.
